The Album and Book
The New Hopefuls (acoustic)
AN ACCIDENTAL JOY
In July, Oscar and I met for the first time since we started Together Apart. We had tried and failed to finish Freedom. So, we came together at the Flesh and Bone studio and worked super hard for 4 hours. Just before leaving, we decided to jam The New Hopefuls. We'd never played it together before. This was a single take, recorded on my iPhone, that just worked. I walked back to the station feeling happy and hopeful.
Reflecting on Together Apart
THE TOGETHER APART JOURNEY
Here, Oscar and I chat about our Together Apart journey. We started it not knowing where we would end up, creating on the fly, responding to the mood of the day. But, as we traveled, our destination started calling to us, and we followed. I'm delighted with where we ended up. I hope you've enjoyed it too.
Making Together Apart
Beats and BVs
I usually compose the music for my songs on either the piano (Happy Ever After) or the guitar (The New Hopefuls). But for When Will I See Me, and Freedom I tried something different. I asked Oscar if he had any beats lying around. He sent me six and two really drew me in. Here, you can hear them as I first heard them. I knew, instantly, the melodies I would sing over them.
Singing backing vocals is one of my greatest pleasures, and I sing all of them on my previous works. But I wanted a choir of voices to end The New Hopefuls. Tricky to do in lockdown! But 13 brave souls answered my call - I sent them these tracks and asked them to record themselves singing them on their phones. Oscar mixed them to give the album finale. I'm so happy with it!
